Abstract: This article examines the contemporary transformations of Jewish visibility in Istanbul through the study of two closely linked institutions: the Foundation of the 500th anniversary of the arrival of the Jews in Turkey, and the Jewish Museum of Turkey. The article distinguishes two faces of living-together (vivre-ensemble) in the post-Ottoman city. On one side stands a discourse of coexistence, produced and staged by heritage and diplomatic institutions, which narrates a long continuity of tolerance between Jews and Muslims. On the other side stands a lived experience marked by demographic decline, everyday discretion, and the securitization of community institutions. Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted between 2023 and 2026, the article analyses the Foundation as an instrument of cultural diplomacy, examines the museum’s exhibition, and the selective memory produced by both.
